Hijo del comerciante Federico Gensfleisch, que adoptar\u00eda m\u00e1s tarde el apellido Gutenberg, y de Else Wyrich, hija de un tendero.\u00a0En el hogar familiar, el joven Johannes fue iniciado en el arte de la orfebrer\u00eda y en las t\u00e9cnicas de acu\u00f1aci\u00f3n de monedas.
