But a recent collaboration by a group of multidisciplinary researchers suggests that one type of oral bacteria may be an important trigger in about half of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">The findings, published in <a href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/scitranslmed.aaj1921\">Science Translational Medicine<\/a> late last year, appear to confirm something that\u2019s been <a href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S0140-6736(01)62155-X\">suspected for at least a century<\/a>: In some cases, gum-disease causing oral bacteria may set off a cascade of events that leads to the autoimmune form of arthritis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">It\u00b4s long been known that patients with RA are more likely to have periodontitis.
